Halloween

If you’re anything like me, Halloween will have always meant a lot to you. As far as I’m concerned, it's not just about the costumes and the sweets—it's the whole Gothic culture and Autumnal atmosphere. The folkloric tales, the dark nights, the red and golden leaves falling from the trees, the horror films, and musing about werewolves, vampires, ghosts, and all the other mysterious creatures that you secretly wished lurked in the shadows.

And you know the best part: everything I’ve always loved about this magical, spooky season, I still get to enjoy as a vegan. The dress-up, the parties, the treats - every eerie tradition - none of it requires harming animals. Whether you're carving pumpkins, whipping up creepy snacks, or handing out things to trick-or-treaters, you can do it all in a way that’s kind to animals and just as fun as ever. Let’s embrace the spirit of Halloween—folklore, frights, and all—while keeping it cruelty-free.

Trick or Treat Ideas

Giving out vegan sweets to trick-or-treaters is a great opportunity to show kids (and adults!) that Halloween isn’t reliant animal products. One common ingredient found in many popular sweets is gelatine, which is made from animal bones, skin, and connective tissues. Pretty gross, right? Sadly, most of the traditional pick-and-mix sweets that people love around Halloween are filled with it, along with other animal-derived ingredients like dairy, beeswax, or even food colorings made from insects. But don’t worry—there are plenty of tasty, affordable, cruelty-free options that are perfect!

For us, we love The Vegan Candy Man for affordable, gelatine-free sweets. He’s got an amazing selection of vegan pick-and-mix options that are every bit as fun and delicious as the ones you’re used to, without any of the icky animal byproducts.

We like to fill up cheap paper goodie bags like the ones shown with a mix of 4-5 small vegan treats. Swizzels' multipack bags, which you can easily find in shops like Home Bargains or your local supermarket, are our go-to. Many of their sweets, like Love Hearts, Parma Violets, and Fizzers, are already vegan. They’re super affordable and come in bulk packs, making them ideal for filling up those goodie bags without breaking the bank. We also like to add a Spooky Chum Moo Free chocolate bar in there for that chocolate fix.

Alternatives to Trick or Treating

If traditional trick-or-treating doesn’t feel right for your family—whether it's the overload of sugary sweets, safety concerns, or just a desire for something a little more meaningful—there are plenty of exciting alternatives that can still capture the spirit of Halloween. These activities are not only fun, but they also offer the chance to instill a love and respect for nature in your children from an early age. Plus, they’ll stimulate young minds, encourage curiosity, and teach valuable lessons about the world around them.

Leaf Collecting and Pressing 🍁🍂

Instead of going door to door for sweets, why not head outdoors and embrace the beauty of autumn? As the leaves are falling, you and your children can collect different types of leaves, press them, and create art. This activity is a wonderful opportunity to learn about the different types of trees in your area, and it gives kids a hands-on way to appreciate nature. You can even frame the leaves as a keepsake of their autumn adventure.

Rock Collecting and Spooky Painting 🎨💀

Another creative option is to go on a rock-collecting adventure, looking for smooth, paintable stones. Once you've gathered a collection, turn them into Halloween decorations by painting spooky designs like ghosts, pumpkins, bats, or black cats. Don’t know which paints are vegan? No worries - we got you covered just click here for a big list of vegan art supplies. Personally, I like to use Amsterdam paints.

Bat or Owl Walks 🦇🦉

Why not take your children on a bat or owl walk this Halloween? Bats tend to hibernate from mid November, so taking the time to see and learn about them before they settle down for the winter can be a thrilling and educational experience. And what could be more magical than hearing, or possibly even seeing, an owl? This is a great way to teach kids about the importance of preserving habitats for these creatures — animals that are often misunderstood, but vital to our ecosystems. You'll create lasting memories while fostering a love for wildlife conservation.

Vegan Scavenger Hunt in Nature 🌱🍂

If you’re looking for a fun, animal-friendly alternative to candy collecting, consider organizing a vegan scavenger hunt in a local nature park. Hide clues or small, eco-friendly treats or toys and let your children explore while learning about the importance of plant-based living and environmental sustainability. This activity combines the thrill of discovery with education about wildlife and nature, all while avoiding sugary snacks.

Stargazing and Ghost Stories 🌕✨

Halloween night offers the perfect opportunity to gaze at the stars and teach your kids about the constellations and the stories behind them. You can create a magical experience by tying in Halloween-themed tales or myths about the stars. It’s a quiet, thoughtful alternative that can foster a lifelong appreciation for the night sky.

The Other Side of Trick or Treating

If you're a parent who feels guilty about your child missing out on trick-or-treating because they're vegan, you’re not alone. Many vegan parents face the challenge of ensuring their children still get to participate in the fun without compromising on their ethics. It’s important to have an open discussion with your child about why avoiding animal products is a core value. You can explain that while other kids may be enjoying the usual treats, enjoying something that causes other beings to suffer isn’t very nice.

One great option is check out our newly launched
Vegan Trick or Treating Community on Facebook. The aim is to join the group, see if there’s any pins in your town on the map, contact the pinned members via D and swap addresses. You also use it to ask if there are other vegan parents in the area hosting parties.

It’s a wonderful way to connect with like-minded families. Many parents today are also conscious of food allergies—so even non-vegan families might be keen to avoid dairy.

Hosting your own vegan Halloween party is also a fantastic option. You’ll have full control over the treats and activities, ensuring everything is animal-free. By doing this, you not only create a safe space for your child but also set an example for others about how easy and enjoyable a vegan celebration can be - and possibly pave the way for better trick or treat options next year!

Considering Wildlife

Halloween is a fun time for us humans, but it can be dangerous and distressing to wildlife. Each year, countless animals suffer injuries due to festive decorations, human activity, and discarded food or waste. Here are key ways to ensure your Halloween celebrations don't unintentionally harm your local wildlife:

Avoid Using Fake Spider Webs

Fake spider webs pose one of the biggest dangers to wildlife. Birds, owls, and small animals can easily get tangled in these synthetic webs and may struggle to free themselves, often resulting in injuries or death. If you’re super keen on using these kinds of webs, please use them indoors, instead.

Ditch Decorations with Loops or Dangling Parts

Any decorations with loops, strings, or dangling parts can pose serious risks. Foraging animals can get their heads or limbs caught in these, leading to strangulation or injury. Opt for solid decorations without hanging parts, and always secure them properly to avoid wildlife interaction.

Avoid Scattering Pumpkin Seeds

While pumpkins themselves are popular with many species of wildlife, scattering pumpkin seeds can be harmful, especially to hedgehogs. Raw pumpkins and their seeds can cause them digestive issues and even serious illness, like diarrhea. Therefore, avoid leaving pumpkin seeds or flesh out for wildlife and always dispose of pumpkins properly.

Don’t Bleach Your Pumpkins

Some people bleach their carved pumpkins to make them last longer. However, bleached pumpkins are toxic to animals, and if wildlife consumes them, it can lead to poisoning. Instead of bleaching, consider natural preservation methods or simply let your pumpkins decompose naturally, but in a way that doesn’t attract wildlife.

Properly Dispose of Candy Wrappers

Candy wrappers are a significant threat to wildlife. Animals might ingest them, leading to digestive blockages, poisoning, or suffocation. Be sure to dispose of all candy wrappers properly and encourage trick-or-treaters to do the same. Consider setting up separate bins for waste to ensure easy and responsible disposal.

Watch for Nocturnal Wildlife

Halloween brings increased foot traffic and noise at night, which can scare wildlife from their usual hiding spots. Be mindful when walking through rural areas and avoid cutting through brushy areas or over long lawns where nocturnal animals may be hiding.

Speciality Chocolate for Grown Ups

Halloween isn't just for kids—many of us adults love to get into the spooky spirit, too. And if you’re looking to spoil your significant other with a romantic treat that ties into the season, Halloween-themed chocolates are a delightful way to celebrate both the holiday and your love.

A Cruelty Free Halloween

Halloween is the perfect time to explore bold and creative makeup looks, whether you're channeling a gothic vibe, spooky fantasy, or supernatural beauty. But while you're transforming yourself into a creature of the night, it's essential to consider what creatures suffer for conventional cosmetics and fashion. The good news? There are plenty of cruelty-free and vegan makeup brands that offer the same dramatic, dark, and dazzling options without the cruelty.

Globally, millions of animals are still subjected to painful tests in the name of beauty. Rabbits, guinea pigs, mice, and even dogs often endure excruciating pain for these products. For example, the Draize eye test is one of the most infamous methods used for testing mascara or eyeliner, where chemicals are dripped into the eyes of rabbits to observe irritation or damage. These defenseless animals often experience severe swelling, ulcers, and even blindness before they are eventually killed.

Similarly, when testing lipsticks, perfumes, and other cosmetics, animals are forced to ingest or endure massive doses of chemicals to gauge toxicity. The results are often burns, poisoning, and agonizing deaths. Choosing vegan and cruelty-free products means standing against this kind of unnecessary suffering, proving that beauty can and should be kind.

If you’re gearing up for a Halloween look with dark, dramatic flair, there are numerous makeup be sure to check out Cruelty-Free Kitty’s gigantic list of ethical products. Here’s some noteable brands that provide gothic, cruelty-free and vegan options without compromising quality or creativity:

  • KVD Vegan Beauty: Known for their intense, long-lasting pigments, KVD Vegan Beauty offers everything you need for Halloween—from rich, black eyeliners to bold lip colors. Their products are entirely vegan and never tested on animals, making them a staple for anyone going for a bold, gothic aesthetic.

  • Black Moon Cosmetics: A haven for anyone seeking celestial, otherworldly looks, Black Moon Cosmetics offers deep, moody shades perfect for your eerie transformations. Their liquid lipsticks and highlighters are not only stunning but also 100% cruelty-free and vegan.

  • Lime Crime: This brand is celebrated for its bright and unique shades, offering an array of colors perfect for any Halloween character. Whether you're going for a witchy green or vampire red, Lime Crime’s cruelty-free and vegan formulas ensure your look is stunning without harming any animals.

Other honorable mentions include Elf Cosmetics, Revolution and Barry M, which offer budget-friendly options with vibrant pigments, perfect for all your Halloween needs.

Compassionate Costumes

It’s not just cosmetics that come at an animal’s expense. Fashion items like fur, leather, and feathers are tied to extreme animal cruelty. Behind every fur trim, leather or wool jacket, or feathered accessory lies a story of immense suffering. Animals used for their fur or leather are often subjected to horrific conditions—they are frequently skinned alive, electrocuted, or poisoned for their pelts. Choosing vegan fashion alternatives can make a big difference. For your Halloween costume, consider faux fur, synthetic leather, and other cruelty-free fabrics that look just as good, if not better, without the brutal consequences for animals.
